700r4 wont shift into third
Sorry this thread isn't about a TBSS, thankfully!!!
This is about the trans in my Third gen Camaro
The help would be much appreciated, if its even possible.
http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/tr...hift-into.html
First off....I got this 700r4 trans from a scrap yard. So this post and the information maybe futile. Im hoping that a little help may solve my issue though.
Alright.... I Installed a transgo 2-3 reprogramming kit in this 700r4 before I tested it the way I got it. Stupid move? Yes. I also installed the kit on a bench instead of in the vehicle (which may or may not matter) Anyways....
What is happening is I have a great 1-2 shift feel, but It will not shift into 3rd. It just goes right back into 2nd.
I did some testing per the direction of Transgo. I got a 300 psi guage to read the line pressure.
It has 70-75 psi at Idle
It has 150-180 PSI If I pull the TV cable at Idle
But....When I put the car in D it only reads 75psi (should be higher)
Did I mess something up when I re-installed the Valvebody or should I expect to rebuild this transmission? (I was going to rebuild it anyways but....I was hoping I got a great deal on a good transmission and rebuild when it breaks 50 miles down the road.)

if its trying to upshift... and the tv cable is telling it to downshift at the same time... you will get this.

As far as I know the TV cable is on correctly. I have a throttle bracket that corrects the angle of the tv cable.

Yes I know how to adjust it.
I just push the gas pedal to the floor and listen for the clicks.

TV cable should be as tight as possible at wide open throttle and have about an inch and an eighth of total travel from idle to wide open. If the trans shifts from second and neutralizes then you probably have a third gear clutch problem. If it stays in second and refuses to make the 2-3 shift then I would look for check ball placement or a valve body gasket covering up a valve body orifice. Might also have a stuck 2-3 shift valve

Thanks!! The line pressure seems to be high enough. So Ill drop the pan and valve body then and see what I messed up. I put this together on the floor in my garage so something may have gotten messed up on the VB gaskets. There wasn't any debris in the pan at all when I took it off either. If this doesn't fix my issues I will just take it to a shop for a rebuilt.
Could the governor possibly cause this?

If the governor valve was stuck or the gear stripped you would not have the 1-2 upshift

Exactly what I was thinking. Had a similar problem with the GN.

Thanks. The governor was fine, I had it out when I put the kit in it.
I just got off the phone with Transgo--the verdict is drop the VB and make sure the checkballs are in the correct spot, do these tests again. If it does the same thing...time for a rebuild.
This is the testing they had me do..
Rev in neutral (foot on brake)--PSI stays at 70 psi
" in reverse- 110 psi
Overdrive rev- Stays at 70 psi
D3 (D position) PSI fluctuates between 110 and over 200 PSI
1 (low) and 2 do the same as D3
The guy i spoke with said that I either have a huge internal leak, or one of the checkballs ended up in the wrong place in the trans.
Im dropping the pan tonight or sat night.

Ill post a picture of it. Im certain my TV cable is correct.
Here's some more info though
The engine is a Carbed 350.
I have a PRP throttle/tv cable bracket to correct the geometry for a carb.

I rechecked the TV cable. It was a bit tight.. but.......The trans does the same thing. 1-2 shift feel is great but when it tries to shift into 3rd the RPMs just go back up as if its in 2nd. There is no slippage, it just goes to the same rpms when it tries to shift to 3rd.
Pics of TV cable setting....

Off comes the Valve body

Just curious and maybe I read it wrong. You so not get line pressure rise in the OD position but get it in D3?

You read that correctly. Pressure rises in D3 (drive) but not OD.

Well.....Im a dumbass or I forgot how to read.
I dropped my Valvebody and shift plate this morning. I forgot to plug some holes in the shift plate that Transgo clearly stated needed to be plugged per their design. Plus....I plugged an extra hole that didnt need to be plugged.
Holes 4,5, D, F needed to be plugged...I Only plugged hole 4 and hole 2 (2 didnt need to be plugged) Now Ill put it back together and find the 3-4 clutch pack is burned up. It would be expected though for the price I paid for the trans.
Maybe they forgot that page in the instructions.
