How to replace steering wheel position sensor
I've been getting a " SERVICE STABILITRAK"message randomly so I took the 'ol girl into the dealership to get to the bottom of it. They charge me $125 to diagnoise it and said it needs a steering wheel position sensor "MAYBE" and wanted to charge me $400-$500 to do it (the part is $80 @ their cost, $125 resale.) I told them I'd take the part and do it myself haha. Has anyone done this and can they advise me of how to do it and anything to avoid? Thanks in advance!

.9hrs per alldata - im yet to authorize the replacement for one of these.
Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling.
Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.
Position the front wheels straight ahead and lock the steering column to prevent rotation of the steering wheel.
Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering column. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.
Remove the steering wheel position sensor retainer screws.
Remove the steering wheel position sensor retainer from the base of the steering column.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the steering wheel position sensor.
Remove the steering wheel position sensor from the steering column.

You'll have to take the sound deadener panel off. Removed pitch bolt from intermediate shaft. Note position of steering wheel before and don't move once shaft is unbolted and removed. Steering shaft can only go in one way but SIR coil can be broken if wheel is moved with shaft disconnected. Two torx screws on bottom of column holding sensor in. Once screws and plate is removed the angle sensor can be slid off and unplugged. Really easy to do.

Thanks for the advice, the hood is popped and I'm letting her cool off after a 30 min. drive, getting ready to tear into it now. My buddy works at a nearby GM dealership and was able to get the part at cost.. $86... Much better then the $400-$500 the dealer wanted for parts & labor, unbelievable. I don't know how the commonwealth that can't turn a wrench affords to drive these things and pay money like that for these kinds of repairs.
