You will need a new trans output shaft and tail housing. You will also need front axle stubs from a RWD and a RWD driveshaft. Greg can get you the parts.

If it's the trans it would be cheapest and easiest to to rebuild it and stay AWD. If the diff is broken it may be easier to just go RWD.

When I had the spline failure my truck wouldn't move more than a few feet and sounded like something was loose in the trans linkage when I tried going thru all the gears. I felt/heard a boom then I was dead in the water. When my trans went I still had reverse and 1st and 2nd. Either way a 2wd conversion would be best and I wish I did that when I had the chance and more money than I do now. Replacing my blown trans with another stock unit was $2300, spline failure was $3600. If its the splines you'd be better off making it 2wd and never having to worry about it again, trust me it's no fun waiting for it to happen again and from the mileage intervals when it seems to happen I'm about due for it again. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

No, not joking at all! I've seen a lot of guys up here on the hill running with the stock 20's in the past, Spddman to mention one name, and he ran 11.5's! Aside from Ross, who is NOW 2WD, I don't think I've seen an AWD on smaller wheels and DR's on all 4 corners. I didn't think traction would really be an issue on an AWD truck until you get into HUGE HP numbers, at which point I see guys convert to 2wd. Pardon the ignorance on my part Thanks for explaining!! Would DR's be good on crappy old steelies?
Sorry, back to OP/Topic!!

Radials would be great on steelies. It will mostly help you with gearing on a low horsepower setup. When you start making a lot of power then it is for traction. When you are looking for ET and you already have traction... thats when you call Bogart, CCW, or True Forged and get some lightweight wheels.

The 245/45/17 size is perfect for the steel spares on an AWD. There are a lot of EVOs in the 9's running that tire setup. You haven't seen many AWD DR setups because most people didn't want to buy 4 wheels and tires.

Why was the spline failure $3600? Was that for parts and labor? How much are just the parts?

As always labor was the killer. I was accelerating onto the highway when mine went and it not only took the splines off the shaft it killed the bearings and the entire housing. Plus they went past the point of damage and re-did everything to the differential and checked the diff for damage as well. The way they rebuilt it was above and beyond the normal (hence the price) and I shouldn't have to worry about it again but I still do.

Good times Marty!!!
Just a thought, stay AWD and 11's are yours later this year....
Convert to 2wd, no 11 second AWD slip for you...
Either way, you still have a damn fast truck!!!!
